Adverse consequences for school districts when students opt out of PARCC

Congratulations Mr. Russoniello!
Periodically, FLENJ (Foreign Language Educators of New Jersey) honors outstanding world language classroom teachers with Teacher Awards at the Spring Conference. In the past, FLENJ has had the pleasure of acknowledging many creative teachers who have given so much to their students and colleagues. With these awards, FLENJ recognizes the enthusiasm and devotion of excellent world language teachers.

Please join us in congratulating our own Matt Russoniello, 7th grade Spanish teacher, for earning the FLENJ teacher award this year. He was presented with this award on Saturday, February 28, 2015 at the Annual Conference in Somerset, NJ. We are so proud of him!

FH's Chris Aviles Sits on OET Tech Tuesday: Games for Learning
Every Tuesday the U.S Department of Education's Office of Educational Technology holds a weekly roundtable discussion with edtech experts. The discussion held on May 5, 2015 was "Games for Learning" and our Educational Systems Coordinator Chris Aviles was invited to discuss his thoughts on the topic and share what we are working on here in Fair Haven!

The discussion's playback can be viewed by visiting: http://jo.my/OETtt.

Everyone is starting to take notice of the great things we are doing in Fair Haven, even our DOE colleagues in D.C.!

It is with great pride that Knollwood School displays the pictures of graduates who are serving their country on active duty in the Armed Forces of the United States of America. These young men and woman have chosen sacrifice and service to their country and are not forgotten as they protect our way of life. This "Wall" reflects that dedication and honors their service. In a continuing effort to keep this display current the committee reaches out to the community to solicit any information about Knollwood graduates who are currently serving.

Public Questionnaire on School Needs
The Fair Haven School District is currently engaged in an effort to assess educational, operational and facility needs in the district and exploring solutions for improvement. This is expected to take the form of a future referendum. Your input via our questionnaire over the past two months has been greatly appreciated. The data will be shared at a later time on our website, under our Strategic Planning page.

Community Chats with our Superintendent
Thank you for attending our Superintendent's Chat on Wednesday, March 18th. Our next Chat will be held later this spring with a topic to be announced shortly.

After extensive interviews with several different firms over the early months of the school year, the Board of Education has selected Spiezle Architectural Group as the firm who will assist in the district’s efforts in identifying the needs and next steps to expand and improve the educational offerings for our current and future students. Spiezle’s team has visited to evaluate the buildings and will spend time with the staff at both schools to gather input. Following those visits, the team will meet with community organizations before presenting the school community with options and recommendations.

Fair Haven Public Schools - 2013-14 NJ Anti-Bullying Bill of Rights Grade (pdf)
As part of New Jersey’s updated Anti-Bullying law, Fair Haven Public Schools have been graded on their efforts to comply with the regulations to protect students from harassment and create a safe school climate. Statewide, the scores range from 0 to 75. Our school district received a grade of 74. It is an average of the total scores of both of our schools in the district. Knollwood scored a 72, while Sickles scored a 75. Please review the PDF files below. One is the official state report, the other a district-created spreadsheet that is an easier read, the third an NJDOE memo on guidance for grading schools and districts.

The scores are based on a 20-page self-assessment that rates performance in eight areas, including prevention, staff training, student curriculum and instruction, and reporting and investigation procedures.
